The Cover

The famous photographer has declined. His agency gave the reason as his decision to not allow the use of that particular image for any book cover.

Okay. As an artist, I completely respect that.

What this means, then, is that I’m now on the lookout for a new cover. I’m veering toward photography and not a painting or other visual art. But have no concrete demands and am completely open to suggestions at the moment.

  1. Hmm. Maybe if we had some idea of what drew you to that photograph? I can see why you don’t want to mention it here, but not having any idea of what it was like (even a general description) makes it a bit tricky to suggest anything else….. If someone else hasn’t already suggested something that might work, feel free to e-mail me.

  2. Hmmmm…

How about something similar to that photo of you posing in a sari by the beach? You can be shadowed in the photograph, in order to make it seem more magical…

I think a strange, ethereal woman in a metallic sari with long hair, surrounded by serpents etc would be nice. Her face must not be visible and the photo must be grainy, like an old photograph.

  3. Hey Michael, thanks for your suggestion. I don’t really think that’s the approach I want though, although if I see the right visual along those lines I will pounce on it nonetheless.

I guess my issue is with exotification and to a different extent, how far I am willing to go in terms of self-subjectification (as opposed to objectification). Myself and the distilled persona developed for my writing are a big draw, sure. I don’t deny that. But part of the reason why I wanted the cover I wanted is because is it so far removed from all that and yet, in an eerie way, deeply connected also.

I really don’t want to be on the cover of my own book. Or have an image of a woman who represents “the persona” there either.
